Students at Unionville H.S. Recognized for Development of Innovative Agricultural Tech Company
At Unionville High School, a group of enterprising students from Grades 9-12 have created their own innovative agricultural tech company, Agrowtech.
Prompted by Samsung’s Solve for Tomorrow challenge and led by the school’s Assistant Head of Science Jeffrey Chan, the students sought to solve real world problems that affect people they know in their community. After extensive research, they decided to focus on the challenges currently affecting farmers in Ontario and beyond.
Agrowtech is a smart modular farming system that incorporates drone imagery, LIDAR, photogrammetry and AI, and presents its data in a convenient mobile app.
As the students of Agrowtech tell us: When farming thrives, we all thrive!
The students were recently recognized with an Applause award at a meeting of the Board of Trustees.

Aurora – June 18, 2025 -- At its June 17 Board meeting, York Region District School Board passed a balanced 2025-2026 budget.
The balanced $1,770.2 billion budget reflects priorities and feedback shared through public consultation results and advisory committees. The areas of focus include healthy and safe learning environments, classroom-based support staff, mental health and student well-being and education technology to enhance student learning .
“As we developed the 2025-2026 budget, the Board sought the input of students, families, staff and community members,” said Ron Lynn, Chair of the Board. “This feedback, along with input from advisory committees and various stakeholders, played an important role in allocating the budget. I would like to thank staff, families and members of the community and the Finance and Property Committee members for the collaborative effort.”
“The 2025–2026 budget reflects the Board’s ongoing commitment to prioritizing areas that matter most to YRDSB students, families, staff and community-priorities that were identified through the consultation process,” said Trustee Butterworth, Chair of the Finance and Property Committee.
Despite ongoing financial pressures, the 2025–2026 budget allocates resources to sustaining support in several high-priority areas as identified through the consultation process.
- Healthy and Safe Learning Environment for All: $518K allocated through the Critical Physical Security Infrastructure (CPSI) to improve physical security; Supporting secure entry systems, surveillance and emergency response infrastructure.
- Classroom-Based Support Staff: Increased Empower Reading Teachers from 27.0 FTE to 28.2 FTE, supporting students with significant reading difficulties; Investing $3.6M in Elementary Primary Literacy Teachers and $564K allocated for Math Facilitators.
- Mental Health and Well-Being: Achieved $1.5M in savings by using Chromebooks in place of laptops for Specialized Equipment. Funding from these savings have been reallocated to enhance support for students’ special needs, health and well-being by funding additional social workers occupational therapists and speech-language pathologists beyond the base budget.
- Education Technology to Enhance Student Learning: Designated $1.5M in technology investment to support student devices and support initiatives in digital literacy, robotics and artificial intelligence; Allocated $250K centrally to support STEM programs, robotics, broad-based technology and other school-based technology expenses.
“We were able to deliver a balanced budget by focusing on what matters most to families - programs that directly support students,” said Bill Cober, Director of Education. “By combining investments in student programs with efficiencies in central departments we were able to deliver a budget that aligns resources to support the Board’s District Action Plan. YRDSB will continue delivering high-quality classroom programming and services that lead to greater outcomes for students.”
“Despite declining enrolment, a balanced budget was reached by identifying efficiencies in central departments while maintaining the delivery of student services,” said Vidyia Maharaj, Associate Director and Chief Financial Officer, Service Excellence. “These included reductions in centralized operating budgets, transitioning to more cost-effective technology and using the savings to support programs and services.”

MESSAGE FROM OUR TRUSTEE - JUNE 2025
As we approach the end of the 2024-2025 school year, I want to take this opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments, hard work and commitment of students, staff and families. As I have visited schools, attended events and heard from families, I continue to be proud of the dedication to public education and student achievement and well-being.
I want to wish my sincere congratulations to all of the graduates and proud families. This is an exciting time and I hope you enjoy this celebration of all your hard work, perseverance and accomplishments. Whether you are moving on to secondary school, the workplace or post-secondary pathways, we wish you the very best in this next exciting chapter of your journey.
We had an opportunity in April to celebrate the accomplishments of 20 students at our annual Celebrating Student Success/Human Rights Ambassadors Awards event.. It was a wonderful reminder of how much our students are able to achieve. While success and achievement looked different for each student, we saw a common theme of determination and care. Students demonstrated a real commitment to lifting up those around them. I see that everywhere in our system as I visit schools. It makes me so proud to see the ways our students are already shaping the future for the better.
Each month in the Boardroom, we also had the opportunity to recognize the achievements of staff and students through the Applause awards. Congratulations to all of the award recipients. These awards capture a sampling of the incredible work happening around York Region District School Board and the successes we see students achieving.
These successes would not have been possible without the hard work and dedication of staff across the system, and I want to thank you for all that you do each and every day. I also want to recognize the contributions that have been made by school councils, volunteers and families. Your work to enhance family engagement and strengthen public education has a noticeable difference in our schools and in the achievement and well-being of students.
This is a very busy time of year and I wish all of the students the best as you work on projects and prepare for upcoming exams. I hope you also enjoy the celebrations that occur at this time of year, and as we celebrate another successful school year.

Trustee, Georgina and East Gwillimbury
MONTHLY MATH TIP - JUNE 2025
Overview
Throughout the year, the mathematical processes have been showcased to demonstrate the learning that students engage in as they experience the math curriculum.
Here's a brief summary of the mathematical processes:
- Problem Solving: Approaching and solving various mathematical challenges through logical reasoning and strategies.
- Reasoning and Proving: Making conjectures, providing evidence, and constructing arguments to justify mathematical ideas.
- Reflecting: Thinking about the strategies and solutions used in mathematical tasks, and assessing their effectiveness.
- Connecting: Relating mathematical concepts to each other and to the real-world.
- Communicating: Expressing mathematical thinking clearly through written and spoken communication.
- Representing: Using models, diagrams, words, symbols, and other forms of representation to communicate mathematical ideas.
- Selecting Tools and Strategies: Choosing appropriate tools (like concrete objects, measuring tools, and technology) and strategies to solve problems efficiently.
If you want to explore math throughout the summer, here are some activities that incorporate the mathematical processes.
Geometry Search - When walking outside, look to see what shapes or patterns you notice! What are the characteristics of these shapes/patterns? How are they similar? How are they different? How much space do they take up? What other shapes could you make if you put them together or took them apart? Predict what the pattern might look like later on. Draw a route to get to a specific location from home.
Cooking Together - Cooking or baking together is alway a great opportunity to bring in mathematics conversations. Choose a recipe together as a family. Determine how much you will need so that everyone can share the food. How many batches of the recipe will you need to make? Estimate how much money will be required to buy the ingredients. How much will each person get? How long will it take to make, cook/bake and clean up? What if an additional friend was going to join you, how might that change things?
Math Scavenger Hunt - Use math to create clues that lead to objects in and around your home (e.g., “I have a circular face. I have 2 different hands that move at different speeds. You can divide my face into 12 equal parts. Each part represents 5. What am I?”)
Guess and Check - Practice using your estimation skills for a variety of different situations. For example, how many steps might it take to get to the park? How long will it take to drive to the splash pad? How much water will I drink today? How much sunscreen will we use this week? etc.
DRESSING FOR THE WEATHER REMINDER
As we begin to experience more hot days, we would like to remind families to please ensure that their child is dressed appropriately for the weather. This includes wearing loose, comfortable clothing. We also suggest that your child brings a refillable water bottle, hat and wears sunscreen every day.
BREAKFAST CLUB
The final day that the Breakfast Club will run is Friday, June 20th. Thank you to all of the students who participated daily. Big THANK YOU to the student helpers who showed up everyday!
REMINDER THAT THERE WILL BE EARLY DISMISSAL THURSDAY, JUNE 26
All students will attend school during the morning of Thursday, June 26, 2025 only. Students will be dismissed early that day at 12:35. Arrangements will be made to ensure that students who are normally bussed to and from school will receive transportation at this time. Markville SS Students Create Lasting Indigenous Art Installation Through Hands-On Workshop with Artist
Students at Markville S.S. had the opportunity to engage in a unique, hands-on learning experience led by Indigenous artist Victoria Grant, known as Vicky the Real Artist.
The workshop brought together 90 students from Grades 9 to 11 to explore the art of wood burning, also known as the art of pyrography, while learning about Indigenous culture, symbolism and storytelling.
“Having hands-on projects like this makes it a lot more fun for the students,” said Hailey, Grade 9 student. “I think it helps us connect to different cultures and ideas because we're really researching all the different symbolisms and meanings.”
Working together to create a lasting art installation for their school, students learned wood burning techniques and reflected on the meaning and history behind their work. Guided by Vicky, they created a land acknowledgement signpost featuring hand-crafted arrows with each arrow pointing toward nearby Indigenous communities with accurate names, distances and directions from the school.
“Historically, Indigenous storytelling was not written. It was always verbal or visual,” says Grant. “It’s opening their eyes to things that they didn’t know before, and that’s extra knowledge that they’ll have hopefully forever.”
The signpost will remain at Markville S.S. as a permanent installation leaving a lasting legacy that sparks dialogue, reflection and a deeper understanding for years to come.
“It’s not just these 90 students who are getting this experience. Once this project is completed, we are going to have a permanent installation here at Markville, where the learning is going to continue,” said Christina Fiorentino, Teacher.

CLASS PLACEMENT OF STUDENTS FOR SEPTEMBER 2025
As our school staff begins to organize for classes in September 2025, it is important for our parents to understand the process for student placement decisions. Our ultimate goal is to provide an optimum learning environment for all students. The current teachers at each grade level will meet with prospective teachers of the next grade level, as well as with special education teachers, ELL teachers, and the Principal/Vice Principal of the school. We work as a team with the following criteria taken into consideration:
- Class sizes consistent with Ministry and Board Guidelines
- A range of performance levels within each class
- Placement of ELL or Special Education students that facilitates resource or withdrawal programs required by some students
- Promoting positive social relationships while minimizing unproductive associations
- Matching learning styles with teaching strategies whenever possible
If there is information regarding your child that you feel would be pertinent to placement decisions, please advise us via email at jersey.ps@yrdsb.ca by May 30, 2025. If you have written in the past, please submit a new letter to ensure we have all up-to-date information. Please be aware that we do not take specific requests for teachers as part of this process.
All final decisions regarding student placement remain the responsibility of the school’s Principal and Vice Principal. Please note that according to Board policy, we will not be informing students and parents regarding their 2025-2026 teacher until the first day of school.

School Board’s Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Strategy Steering Committee Led by Community
The York Region District School Board’s Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Strategy Steering Committee is now being chaired by members of the community.
“I think it’s very important for the community to take a lead in the steering committee,” said Michael Bowe, one of the three steering committee co-chairs. “It really allows us to explore various challenges and gaps and successes of the board in ways that we weren't able to do.”
The YRDSB Anti-Black Racism Steering Committee was formed in June 2019 with the goal of developing a strategy to dismantle anti-Black racism at the YRDSB. The Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Strategy was launched in 2021. The committee, composed of YRDSB staff and community members, continues to meet regularly to ensure accountability and shared leadership in dismantling anti-Black racism.
“I believe that by Co leading and Co creating the work that's been done by the committee, hopefully it will create a better feeling of trust and better relevance to the community and people in the community will feel that they have a more of an opportunity to be heard,” said Dr. Jeffrey Thompson, Co-Chair, Dismantling Anti-Black Racism Strategy Steering Committee.
The committee is currently co-chaired by three community members: Michael Bowe, Phiona Durrant and Dr. Jeffrey Thompson.
“That’s how I got involved; bringing that natural community, authentic community voice. Let us work with you to implement the change, to break down the systemic barriers,” said Co-Chair Phiona Durrant.

D.A.R.E. Event Inspires Young Innovators Through Robotics
This week, elementary and secondary students from all over YRDSB came together for the 3rd Annual Differentiated Access Robotics Expo (D.A.R.E.) at Bill Crothers Secondary School for a hands-on day of STEM learning and robotics challenges.

This year's D.A.R.E. event continues its mission to engage community class students in grades 4 and up, in five different activities. Students used mini robot balls to complete a series of challenges, which included mini-putt, soccer, wrestling, obstacle courses, artwork and everyone's favourite, a dance party! With an emphasis on inclusivity and teamwork, the event creates an accessible space for all students to explore the exciting world of technology.
As participants took part in robotics challenges and STEM activities, they not only worked on technical skills but also learned the value of working together towards a common goal. The event has become a highlight for students and teachers, showcasing the power of education to bring out creativity, problem-solving and innovation in all students.
The D.A.R.E. Expo ensures that each student has the opportunity to shine, fostering an environment where everyone can grow, learn and connect through the magic of robotics.
GIVE Program Empowers Volunteers and Enriches Education
Since its inception in 2004, the GIVE (Get Involved Volunteer In Education) program has been providing valuable volunteer training and fostering strong community connections throughout YRDSB.
Born out of a collaboration between the YRDSB and CCSYR, GIVE aims to empower parents, community members, school assistants and post-secondary students by offering comprehensive training for volunteering in local schools.
Each year, the program trains up to 100 participants across four cohorts at various Community Education Centres. Over the course of 15 hours spread across five days, volunteers are equipped with essential knowledge on topics such as Equitable and Inclusive Education, Effective Communication, Human Rights, Employment Readiness and much more. Upon completion of the training, participants commit to volunteering at least 20 hours during the school year, with many going above and beyond, returning year after year to continue their service.
GIVE plays an important role in supporting student learning by enhancing school-community partnerships. Volunteers assist both in the classroom and at home, helping students thrive in a supportive, inclusive environment. The program also contributes to the overall well-being and achievement of students by increasing parent engagement and strengthening parent-school relationships.
Since its launch, more than 2,500 parent and community volunteers have been placed in schools. Many GIVE graduates have even gone on to find employment with YRDSB, furthering their professional development and career opportunities.
The GIVE program also plays a crucial role in meeting Ontario's educational goals, aligning with the District Action Plan and the Multi-Year Strategic Plan. It promotes well-being, student success, and community involvement, making it an essential resource for schools and volunteers alike.
The GIVE program is a true testament to the power of volunteerism in education.
